Suzdal,
whose history goes back over almost one thousand years, occupies a special place
among the many ancient towns of Russia. It constitutes an architectural ensemble
containing a vast number of historical monuments and has survived almost
unchanged by the growth of industry and large-scale redevelopment which
inevitably leave their mark upon the modern town. The architecture of Suzdal is
in perfect harmony with the surrounding countryside. The neighbouring
water-meadows are an integral part of the scene and are being preserved along
with the architectural monurnents.
Suzdal is a fine example of the
care given in the Russian Federation to the preservation of the nation's
historical and cultural heritage. Considerable resources are regularly allocated
by the state to the restoration and study of ancient monuments.
Suzdal, once a political and
then a religious centre, has now become a tourist centre. This guide will help
the visitor to Suzdal to appreciate its numerous and largely religious architectural monuments and artistic treasures.
In old Russia, as in many other countries, no expense was spared in the building
and decoration of churches and monasteries, to which were attracted the best
craftsmen coming, for the most part, from among the people. They brought to the
architecture, painting, sculpture and jewellery their talent and their view of
the world. This book will acquaint the reader with their art, with the history
of Suzdal both past and present, and advise him on the best time and method of
organising his visit.
The itinerary depends on the
amount of time available. Ideally the visitor to Suzdal should come for two or
three days, but it is possible to visit the most important monuments in one day, in which case it is recommended that the
visitor view them in the order in which they are presented in the guide. If the visitor has two or more days at his disposal he can, while keeping to
approximately the same itinerary, view the monuments in more detail, visit the numerous exhibitions and simply stroll through the town, which is often called a
"town from a Russian fairy-tale".
For the sake of convenience, the guide contains a
list of the terms used in the text.
